3/19 Th |
- ERTH-101 ASTRONOMY LECTURE (Th Night 6 -
9:05 pm HYBRID)
- Please do not
sit in back 5 rows (unless all front rows are full).
- This is an
accelerated hybrid course, and as such proceeds at a very fast pace.
Students will be expected to attend lecture and also do a significant
amount of work on-line independent of lecture (topics that are different
from lecture). This class is not for the slacker. You have
to take initiative and keep up with the work. Students who do not
apply themselves often drop
or do not succeed. Those who attend regularly, watch the on-line
lectures, and do the homework do well.
- Students enrolled in this section, but who
do not attend, will be dropped to make room for
those trying to add. To keep your spot in this class, you must
attend every day (for the full class period). It is not fair to
students trying to add if students who miss class are taking up spots.
- Go over
syllabus and class expectations.
Class website at www.fieldstudy.com.
- Read on-line version of syllabus in
preparation for "Syllabus Quiz" to be given next week.
- Review the following:
Feynman Quote (video)
and
Scientific Method (follow hyperlinks for more info).
- Lecture "kit cards" are due next week.
These are available at the bookstore (from the cashier on the top floor
and not from downstairs where the texts are located). Cost
is about $7.
- Read Ch 1 on size and scale, and Ch 2 on rotation, revolution, seasons, moon phases, and
eclipses. Then move on to Ch 3 on the history of Astronomy. Ch 2-3
are real important so get into this material as soon as you can.
- TEST 1: To be given in class next
week. Tests are only 50 questions long and you must bring a long form
scantron (the long skinny ones). We have many short tests during
the semester. No single
test will "make or break" your grade in this class. It makes it so
that you don't have an overwhelming amount of material to study for just
one exam and encourages consistent attendance and performance. Please
note - there are no make up tests.
- Tonight, your clickers will be registered
to you. Select a seat that will work for you for the remainder of
the semester. Consider distance from the front, lighting,
distractions, friends, etc.
- To
encourage you to make use of tutorial
services, you are required to "visit" a tutor
so that you meet them and know where they are located. The Tutor
Schedule is posted on my web site. This is a required assignment
and is worth 10 pts if done by Friday 10 am of next week (half credit after that). Don't
miss out on these points. Be sure to "sign in" for credit. To get
credit you must sign in with the Tutor.
It's not enough to just sign in with the Gateway Center. You must
actually talk to the tutor!
- Join our school club (fun people, events, activities, discounts) -
Search on
Facebook for "SBCC
Astronomy Club"
-
REQUIRED
ON-LINE VIDEOS TO WATCH: This is an accelerated HYBRID class,
and as such, it is required that you watch these video presentations
narrated by Professor Fred Marschak. These videos match the slide
presentations we use in class and best prepare you for success in this
course. All subjects are listed here, and we will proceed in
sequential order.
- EXTRA CREDIT: Click here to view all
Extra Credit opportunities for this class. Be sure to sign in and post your responses on Moodle.
For the planetarium shows, you will be given a class pass to get you into the museum for
free (but you still need to pay for the show).
- STUDY GUIDES:
1,2,3,4
Refer to the following study guides. Use the lecture and reading
as your primary guide, and these study guides as a secondary guide to
help you get organized. Not everything in the study guide will be
on the test. Go by the specific chapters (so for this first test,
just Ch 1-3).
- TEST SCHEDULE FOR
SEMESTER
Test 1: 3/26
The test will include material from Ch 1-3 (mostly Ch 2 on seasons,
moon phases, and eclipses, and Ch 3 on the history of astronomy).
Test 2: 4/9
This test will cover material from the first test, plus tides, the
properties of light in Section 4.1, and the Earth and Moon sections
of Ch 6.
Test 3: 4/16
Will focus on material from Ch 6 on the Terrestrial Planets.
Test 4: 4/23
Ch 7 on Jovian Planets. Includes material on all the planets (terrestrial + Jovian).
Test 5: 4/30
Will focus mostly on Ch 8 (Asteroids, Meteoroids, Comets, Solar
System formation), Ch 5 on the sun, plus reviewing all the planets
(Ch 6-7).
Test 6: 5/7
Ch 5, plus Ch 9-10 on properties of stars and nucleosynthesis.
Test 7: 5/14 (Test 7 and Final are given on the same day
during finals week)
Everything from Test 6 plus white dwarfs, neutron stars, pulsars,
black holes, relativity, and cosmology. Final: 5/14 (Test 7
and Final are given on the same day during finals week)
Cumulative, focusing mostly on material from earlier in the semester
(moon phases, seasons, eclipses, history of astronomy, planets,
asteroids, meteoroids, comets, etc
- EMAILED TO YOUR PIPELINE ACCOUNT:
(If
you are not receiving emails from me in Pipeline, check registration
status, junk folder settings, etc.)
Greetings ERTH-101 Astronomy Lecture Students:
If
you are getting this email, you are enrolled in my Astronomy Lecture
Course. Please read the following important information.
SPECIAL ERTH-101 HYBRID SECTION:
You are enrolled in my ERTH-101 Astronomy course. This is a HYBRID
COURSE, and as such DOES NOT MEET THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEMESTER.
This is a full semester's course accelerated into half a semester.
We strongly recommend that you take a regular full-length semester
section, rather than this accelerated short course. That said, the
short course meets the needs of students who have limited time,
and/or do well with on-line and hybrid type courses. Keep in mind
that when class begins mid semester, that the class will proceed at
an accelerated rate twice the normal speed.
WARNING: The accelerated course is very challenging and there is a
high rate of drops and non-passing grades. It is VERY STRONGLY
recomended that you take a regular course rather than this hybrid
course.
EARTH-101 ASTRONOMY
COURSE:
Class
starts March
19. Students who do not attend the very first class
will be dropped to make room for those trying to add. Anyone
missing class any time during the first few weeks will forfeit their
spot to someone else. Do not miss class! Parking on campus can be
difficult. Be sure to arrive early to assure that you are on time.
The class meets in PS-101. Don't confuse PS-101 with ES-101 or
EBS-101. The PS-101 class is its own building up the hill from the
bookstore about half way toward the Student Services building.
HOW
TO ADD THE CLASS:
If you are getting this email, you are already enrolled. However,
for those who are trying to add, the MW classes and TuTh classes are
full, but the Tu Night class has openings (tell your friends). We
also offer a class on Fridays. To add the Tu Night class, email me
for an add code and/or come the first day of class. To add the Friday class,
contact the instructor through Pipeline (it's not me), and/or show
up on
Friday.
SWITCHING SECTIONS in ERTH-101:
To switch sections, you have to try and add the section as described
above, then drop the section you are in. Let the instructor know
you are trying to switch sections.
ERTH-102 ASTRONOMY LAB:
The ERTH-102 Astronomy lab is not required for students who are
enrolled in the ERTH-101 Astronomy lecture. Without the lab, the
lecture transfers as a science "without" a lab. With the lab, the
class transfers as a science "with" a lab. If you wish to take the
lab, you do not need to take the lab the same semester you take the
lecture. Taking the lab any future semester will work for
transferability.
ERTH
102 ASTRONOMY LAB TIMES:
For those enrolled in the Astronomy Lab, be sure to come at 4
pm this
week for the Mon or Tues night lab, and 7
pm for the
Wed or Thrs night lab. Lab WILL MEET the first week for a couple of
hours (except for the Monday holiday),
and those who do not attend WILL BE DROPPED. No need to buy
anything in advance, just be sure to come so that you are not
dropped. For the Mon night section and the Tue night section, there
are some funny times printed in the schedule. Ignore these for now
and come at 4
pm the
night you are enrolled and the times will be clarified. Note that
the lab meets off-campus. Here are directions:
