EARTH 101 (Astronomy Lecture Friday 9:35 - 12:40 pm)

DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS

1/29 Fri
  • Fred Marschak and I are team teaching this section.  Mr. Marschak will be teaching this course for the first half of the semester, and I will be teaching it the second half of the semester.  To view course materials, go to www.astroprof.com.
3/26 Fri
  • The Fri class will continue following Mr. Marschak's syllabus, point system, and extra credit.  There will be no further "Moodle" discussions.  This "Daily Announcements" page will be updated with every class and will serve as a way for you to keep track of important announcements, assignments, test dates, etc.  You can access this "Daily Announcements" page from my website at www.fieldstudy.com.
  • I like to give shorter tests more frequently.  You will always get at least a week's warning before a test.  Our next test will be during our next class meeting Fri April 9 (right after spring break) and will focus on material on all the planets (both Ch 13 and Ch 14).  It is a short 50 question test that will be given for only part of class on that day.
  • We will lecture on Ch 14 (Jovian Planets).  Our next test on all the planets (Ch 13 and Ch 14) will be on Fri April 9 (the week after spring break). It is a short 50 question test that will be given for only part of class on that day.
  • For a detailed review, use Mr. Marschak's study guide:
    http://www.astroprof.com/lectbase/objE2new.htm
  • For a summary sheet of all the planets, you may also find this helpful: http://www.fieldstudy.com/Classes/Earth101Lect/PlanetSummary.doc
  • We are mid-semester.  It's important that you don't fall behind.  Grading is based on consistent performance.  No single test will "make" or "break" your grade.
  • Clickers have been assigned.  Check seating chart up front to be sure you are in correct seat.
  • Clicker quiz questions to be given at the start of class, during class, and at the end of class.
  • Join our school club (fun people, events, activities, discounts) - Search on Facebook for "SBCC Astronomy Club"
  • HAVE A GREAT SPRING BREAK
No class next week.  Take the week off in all your classes on me....
  • TEST NEXT CLASS MEETING ON FRI APRIL 9.  If you missed lecture last Friday 3/26, be sure to watch Fred's videos on the Jovian planets (Ch 14).  It's also good to review the videos on the terrestrial planets as well (Ch 13).
  • To help you review material covered in class, Fred Marschak has prepared a set of lecture slide videos.  These short QuickTime videos can serve as a great study aid. You will need to have (or download) Quicktime to view the video files.  No need to purchase ANYTHING!!!

  • Be sure to read all the announcements posted last class (before spring break) listed above.
  • Will review a bit and lecture on the Sun and the properties of light (Ch 5).  Notice that we have jumped back to earlier in the book.  We will continue with Ch 5-11 through the end of the semester.
  • Mr. Marschak will lecture next Fri 4/16.  Clicker quiz questions will be given.
  • Next test will be the following Friday 4/ 23.  Please remember that attendance is critical to your success in this course.
4/16 Fri
  • Grade reports have been sent to your Pipeline account.  They include the short test we took last Friday 4/9.  Since this my tests are a bit different than Mr. Marschak's, I have curved the results so that four questions on the test were "freebees".  That means you could have missed four questions and still gotten a 100% A+.  The cumulative high percentage in the class is currently 100%.  Great job!

  • Mr. Marschak will be conducting class this Friday 4/16.  Clickers quiz questions will be given as usual at the start of class, during class, and at the end of class. We will be covering some important material - so don't miss out!  Attendance is crucial to your success in this course.

  • Our next short 50 question test is scheduled for the following Friday 4/23.

  • Have fun, and see you Fri 4/23.
